How private schools work
The map gets private-school locations statewide from the California Department of Education GIS layer. It then asks the applicable county parcel service which parcel contains the school point when that county publishes a usable public GIS service. When a statewide parcel match is found, the 2,640-ft zone is buffered from that parcel boundary. If no parcel match is available, the map draws a larger 3,500-ft dashed warning circle around the CDE point and labels it approximate .
Private parcel coverage
Exact private-school parcel matching currently uses public county parcel services when available.
Included in this build: Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego, Sacramento, Santa Clara,
Alameda, Contra Costa, and Ventura counties. In every other county, private schools still appear
using the conservative 3,500-ft dashed warning zone instead of disappearing.
Important limitation
This is a screening tool, not an official CDCR determination. A school may occupy multiple parcels, leased space, or a campus footprint that differs from the single parcel containing its CDE point. Statewide parcel coverage can also vary by county and source date. Treat orange dashed private-school zones as “do not rely on this map alone.” Have parole/CDCR verify the exact proposed residence before signing or paying a nonrefundable deposit.
